每當到了夏天，活蹦亂跳的松鼠似乎更頻繁地在樹木草坪間活動，但有的時候，牠們會一動也不動軟塌塌地趴倒地上，大家可能會認為牠們要不中暑生病了，要不就是從樹上不小心掉了下來，需要幫助。事實上，松鼠的這個動作是在散熱，大家不用太擔心啦。  

In the hot summer days, many squirrels would be laying down flat, face down with all four paws on ground？ Are they sick? Actually, they are "splooting" which helps them cool down by dissipating body heat.

松鼠們四爪張開，小肚子朝下靜靜趴著，實在是一改平常蹦蹦跳跳的活躍狀態，不免讓途經的路人擔心牠們怎麼了。美國紐約公園管理局近日便在社交媒體上表示，松鼠的這個動作實際上是在散熱， 因為在炎炎夏日，松鼠會喜歡這樣趴在涼爽的地面，藉此降低體溫。

松鼠在夏天變「趴趴鼠」的現象，UCLA 生態學教授 Dan Blumstein 就解釋說，松鼠腹部的皮毛比較少，所以像肚皮朝下趴著有助降溫。

實際上，哺乳類動物經常會通過趴在地面上來散熱，英文稱為 splooting，例如 Blumstein 教授正在研究的土撥鼠（marmot），就喜歡在天熱時趴在大圓石上，因為這些岩石比較涼爽。

家有萌寵的朋友可能會驚訝，「我家狗狗也愛這樣趴著！」難道不同種類的動物「散熱」的方式是互通的？ 在網路上有網友也表示，貓咪也愛「躺平」，看來也是在散熱嘛。

Blumstein 教授表示：「炎熱的天氣會改變動物的行為，像是小鳥有時候會像小狗一樣，張開嘴巴還伸出舌頭，氣喘吁吁地散熱，看起來就像生氣了一樣。」
