The Beauty of Japanese Culture Viewed Through the Lens of Kimono
Guest curated by Hitomi Harama

May 20 – Sept 3, 2017
Nikkei National Museum, Burnaby BC.

This traditional Japanese garb has become ubiquitous inspiration for Western fashion, and in Japan, it is steeped in culture which is deeply rooted in the core aesthetic sense of Japanese life.  This exhibit showcases the beauty of Japanese culture through the lens of kimono.

Guest curator Hitomi Harama, a resident of Victoria, comes from a family of kimono artisans and collectors from Japan. Exhibit highlights will illuminate the philosophy of kimono: in harmony with nature, coordination with different climate and seasons, attention to detail; the art of kimono: craft and design, dying & weaving techniques and patterns, design motifs; and the ecological aspects: structure of kimono and use of textile materials.

Opening Celebrations – Saturday May 20, 1 – 4pm, free to attend – includes guest curator talk and gallery tour, Satsuki-kai Japanese dance demonstration, Ikebana (traditional Japanese flower arranging) by Kaz Takahashi, tea from Silk Road Tea, and Japanese treats.  A special pop-up shot of vintage kimono and haori (kimono jackets) will be on offer by KimonoLove.
