Twinning together Indigenous storytelling, cultural teachings,

songs, authentic languages and the ancient stick game of Slahal.

Audiences are witnesses to the sharing of cultural practice, oral history and lived experience.

Vancouver Moving Theatre is pleased to announce the premiere, and National Tour, of Weaving Reconciliation: Our Way, a new play and cultural encounter that gives voice to those who have lived within Canada’s long shadow of colonialism.

Led and performed by indigenous artists, Weaving Reconciliation: Our Way brings to life the story of Old One (Jonathan Fisher) and his journey to reconcile with himself, his family and his community.

Old One’s dream-like healing journey unfolds as he opens himself to his memories: of the impact of residential school on his family, the effect of intergenerational trauma on his daughter Nicole (Tai Amy Grauman), the decline of the fishing industry and the resulting loss of a working life on the water.

With humour, games, songs and gifts of hope from Trickster (Sam Bob) and his Ancestors; and with unscripted cultural sharing by youth and cultural knowledge-keepers, Old One witnesses resilience and hope for the future.

“Weaving Reconciliation: Our Way is about our hopes for a good future, guided by the principles of our cultural past.”    Director, Lead Writer, Renae Morriseau

Vancouver Moving Theatre is thrilled that this unique and timely production, proudly created on Coast Salish Territories (Vancouver/Downtown Eastside), will be shared with communities across Canada on a three week National Tour:

·         May 30 – June 1: Syilx Territory (En’owkin Centre, Penticton First Nation)

·         June 6 - 9: Treaty 13 Territory (Native Earth Performing Arts, Toronto)

·         June 14 – 17: Treaty 1 Territory and Métis Homelands (Théâtre Cercle Molière, Winnipeg/St. Boniface)

The production’s exceptional team of Indigenous artists includes, among others,

Renae Morriseau (Director), Chandra Melting Tallow (Projected Image Designer) and an ensemble of urban Indigenous actors, elders and poets from Vancouver/Downtown Eastside, Toronto and Winnipeg:  Vern Bevis(‘Darryl-with-a-Chip-on-his-Shoulder’),Sam Bob(‘Trickster’), Tania Carter(‘Muriel’), Jonathan Fisher(‘Old One’), Tai Amy Grauman (‘Nicole’),Stephen Lytton(‘Steve’), Sophie Merasty(‘Mom’), Latash Maurice Nahanee (‘Woody’), Tracey Nepinak(‘Rosemary’)and Marjorie White (‘Marge’). They are joined on stage by youth and cultural knowledge keepers from the host community/territory.

Weaving Reconciliation: Our Way is co-written by award-winning artists Renae Morriseau (Saulteaux Cree) with Rosemary Georgeson (Coast Salish/Sahtu Dene) and Savannah Walling (American Canadian); enriched by contributions from the cast, knowledge-keepers and partnering communities; and developed with the assistance of Playwrights Theatre Centre (Vancouver) and the Weesageechak Begins to Dance Festival (Native Earth Performing Arts, Toronto).
