12:30pm - Pentatonics

In a city that is increasingly becoming reflective of the Asia Pacific it’s surprisingly difficult to find next gen artists of Asian heritage who are interested in sharing the traditional sounds of their ancestors in an accessible way; which may explain why Pentatonics are in such high demand. They’re a Vancouver-based instrumental band that utilizes traditional Chinese instruments include Guzheng (Chinese Zither), Dizi (Chinese Flute), Pipa (Chinese Lute), Erhu (Chinese Fiddle), Ruan (Chinese Guitar), Piano and the Drums. Every member is an exceptional and award winning performer with over 10 years of performing experience. They play a variety of genres in n exciting fusion with traditional Chinese music.

2:00pm - LOUD

LOUD has every potential to live up to its name. But, the Vancouver duo of Elaine Stef on electric guitar and Eileen Kage on taiko drums and percussion is more about dynamics than pedal to the metal volume. Elaine and Eileen have had much time to play with the nuances of their unique arrangement since forming 1996. What they have seemingly perfected are instrumental compositions rich in propulsive rhythm and flights of astral guitar textures. Vancouver music fans will appreciate ‘echo and flow’ as one of the final few recordings to come out of historic Mushroom Studios before they closed the doors.

3:30pm Kalan Wi

Kalan Wi are a roots-infused cultural group that uses the Traditional Lil’wat language and chanting styles to create their own brand of world beat music. In the Lil’wat language Kalan wi means to “listen, pay attention now”. Formed in 2007, in the Lil’wat Nation ( Mt. Currie BC) Kalan Wi are Leroy Joe (vocals, guitars) Vania Stager (vocals), Russell Wallace (vocals, hand drum, keys, bass etc..) and Richard Doucet (percussionist, back up vocals). Leroy, Russell and Vania are Lil’wat Nation members and Richard Doucet is from New Brunswick.

5:00pm – Orchestra Gorma Durma

The 20-piece Goma Dura is Canada’s largest salsa band, including 3 singers, 11 horns and three percussionists. High energy music and a massive sound! Formed in 2000 by John Korsrud, Goma Dura is an all-star collection of musicicians from Vancouvers salsa and latin-jazz communities and has performed all the major Vancouver festivals. It released a live CD on CBC’s Mothercoprp records in 2002. Featuring: John Korsrud | Allan Johnson | Niho Takase | Raphael Geronimo | Jack Duncan |Phil Belenger |Susana Abreu | Derry Byrne | Kent Wallace | Vince Mai | Rod Murray | Dennis Esson |Hugh Fraser | Brad Muirhead |Bill Runge | Eli Bennett | Jens Christianson | Chad Makela.

Sunday June 23, 2013

12:30pm – Raggae On The Rocks

In the late 1960′s, it was popular for record companies in Jamaica (like studio 1) to produce b-sides with covers of successful American hits. In this tradition, Reggae on the Rocks  play your favorite tunes from the 70′s through today with a some serious reggae stylings; familiar classics of rock and roll influenced by Bob Marley, Toots, The Slackers, Sublime and other all-stars of Reggae, Rocksteady and Ska music. Bass and drum breaks, soulful horn lines and authentic vocal stylings are sonic staples of this dubbed out cover-group’s exciting reexamination of one of music’s most universally beloved genres.

2:00pm – Kytami

Violinistextremist -an explosive one-woman electric violinist knock-out! If a line exists between classical and electronic, between ancient and new age, synthetic and organic, Kytami has sliced them all using only a violin bow… but what more does she need?  Perhaps Canada’s most diverse and engaging fiddle player, she is an unbelievably energetic performer. Through an alchemy of classical, fiddle styles fused with the heavy bass elements of Dubstep and Hip Hop, Kytami has managed to soar above the constraints of musical genre.

3:30pm – The Falcons

71 percent of the earth’s surface is covered by the ocean. About 44 percent of the world’s population lives within 150 kilometers of the sea. Human beings are inextricably connected to the rhythms of the waves and the crash of the surf. In today’s music world we hear surf guitar sounds in Latin and Brazilian music, Arabic, Balkan, Russian, Cambodian, you name it.The Falcons from Vancouver, are masters of the craft who continue to ply and play in the shadows of pop culture bombast. The Falcons are a rare sighting, whom we’ve procured to perform for our 25th Anniversary.

5:00pm – Los Furios

Los Furios performs an intense mix of reggae and punk-infused ska originals sure to get you out on the floor!  The six-piece groove unit from Vancouver has performed across Western Canada since 2000. Los Furios began adding horns to the line-up in 2001 and have been evolving their blend of punk, ska, and reggae ever since. The band features a two-piece horn section complemented by distinct songwriters and vocalists. This instrumentation adds to their diverse sound.
