In 1993 Fairchild Radio, part of Fairchild Media Group, acquired BC's original multicultural radio station AM1470 CJVB from its founder Jan van Bruchem. CJVB originally started broadcasting in 1973 to BC's primarily European first-generation immigrants. Fairchild Radio expanded CJVB's service to over 23 distinct cultural communities, and revamped its schedule to reflect the changing face of the Lower Mainland's multicultural communities.

In 1997, Fairchild Radio launched 96.1 FM, CHKG, to embrace even more of Greater Vancouver's rich cultural mosaic. 96.1 FM gave the area two exciting innovations. First, the cultural communities served by Fairchild Radio now encompassed over a dozen previously unserved groups. As well, the Chinese community was now provided with radio service in their own language twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Through our stations of 96.1 FM and AM 1470 in Vancouver, 94.7 FM in Calgary (November 1998), and 88.9 FM (June 1995) and AM 1430 (September 1995) in Toronto, we provide the only national Chinese radio network in North America.

As well as being Vancouver¡¦s most popular Chinese language broadcaster,AM1470 CJVB and 96.1FM CHKG have programs in Spanish, Punjabi, Korean,Greek, Italian, Vietnamese, Persian, Croatian; as well as in English for the Caribbean and Celtic communities. We are committed to supporting these communities by promoting their events on both on our What¡¦s On page on our web site and on our on-air Multicultural Events line heard daily on both 96.1FM and AM1470.

We are happy to aid these communities in the world outside our studios as well. For years we have sponsored the Caribbean Days Festival, the Latino Soy Festival, the Taiwanese Cultural Festival, Ital an Week and Greek Summer Fest. Wherever our different cultures meet, we¡¦ll be there to promote the event ¡V and encourage our listeners to discover the rich cultural mix that Vancouver offers.

Fairchild Radio supports Canadian musicians in very concrete ways. Our annual compilation CD, The World of 96.1 FM, offers exposure across North America to local world musicians. Our very first compilation CD won the 1998 CAB Gold Ribbon Award in Canadian Talent Development, and we have been finalists in that category in several years since.

We are also accessible through our websites: in Vancouver www.am1470.com and www.fm961.com; in Toronto, www.fairchildradio.com; and in Calgary, www.fm947.com. Our programming is available 24 hours a day on the World Wide Web through RealAudio.
