Big World Band |
BIG WORLD BAND is a new Vancouver ensemble comprised of musicians from diverse musical traditions of the world – Chinese, Persian, South-Asian, and European – who came together in the summer of 2011 to explore our common musical humanity and perform public concerts that increase and celebrate cultural awareness and understanding amongst our ethnically-diverse communities. Though they began with a modest group of plucked instruments from the Silk Road, the band hopes to expand their numbers and diversity in the coming years.
The band strives for maximum communication across cultures and the development of a consistent group sound and repertoire. Their mandate is to combine musical instruments and traditions of the world in various new ways to create what they call a “new world music.” Their musical repertoire ranges from ancient pieces, to new recombinations and arrangements, to new compositions. Their goal is to celebrate the meeting of many cultures.
The Big World Band Society is a not-for-profit society registered under the BC Societies Act.
